Wastewater Laboratory Analyst

The City of Jefferson is currently hiring a full time Laboratory Analyst for our Wastewater Division. This position is responsible for sample collection and laboratory analysis of wastewater samples as it pertains to the NPDES permit and plant process control. Generates reports and maintains spreadsheets in accordance to the NPDES permit and federal, state, and local laws and regulations. 

Examples of Duties

Collects samples for laboratory analyses and examination. Conducts various laboratory analyses including Settleability, TSS, MLSS, MLVSS, Settleable Solids, TS, H2S, e. coli, and BOD. Conducts various field measurements with portable lab equipment. Calculates, interprets, and maintains laboratory results and creates and maintains reports and spreadsheets. Conducts microbiological examination and identification.   Monitors H2S in collection system.

Assists with the pretreatment and land application programs.

Calibrates equipment and conducts QA/QC requirements.

Informs Plant Manager and WWTP Supervisors of changes in lab data.


Typical Qualifications

Physical:  Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. Ability to lift, bend, squat, twist, stoop, reach, climb and stand. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Ability to work with hazardous chemicals. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to traverse over rough terrain.

 Mental:  Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Ability to understand, apply and utilize chemical and mathematical equations and calculations. Ability to understand State and Federal regulations regarding wastewater treatment and its effects. Ability to follow standard methods for laboratory analytical procedures. Ability to understand methods, practices and equipment in wastewater treatment and apply to process control. Ability to work efficiently under stressful conditions. Ability to understand and follow safe procedures.

Requires an accredited Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or a related field and one year related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Supplemental Information

Missouri Class C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's License or have the ability to obtain the required license.
